Chairman, Fraternal Order of Police

March 15th 2005

Today the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office Employees took a stand for what is right.
We held an Informational Picket in front of the Commissioners Office to let them know
we would not stand idly by while they ruined the safety of Fairfield County.
We feel that the very last line item stricken from a budget should be PUBLIC SAFETY.
Fairfield County is the third fastest growing county in the State of Ohio and as such,
we should be bolstering our forces, not cutting them.

Sheriff Dave Phalen joined us for a press conference at 9:45 A.M. before we went before
the Commissioners and asked for their support. Sheriff Phalen requested that they
restore $1 million to the Sheriff’s Office budget, so he will not be forced to lay
off additional personnel. It is unfortunate for all of us and all of you that the
Commissioners would not restore our budget. Effective on March 21st, 2005 there will
be a total of 26 vacancies at the Sheriff’s Office, most of which are Deputies.

I would like to thank the citizens and travelers who honked their horns in support of
our endeavor while we stood outside in the bitter cold of the morning. I would also
like to express gratitude to the staff of Burger King who delivered sandwiches to us
so we did not have to leave our post and appreciation to Sheriff Dave Phalen for
showing his support of the deputies today. It means more to us than he can imagine.

To all our fellow employees who have been or will be laid off because of the short
sightedness of the County Commissioners, I wish them the best of luck.
