Deputies Speak Out
The Fairfield County Commissioners: Judy Shupe, Jon
Myers, Mike Kiger...These three commisioners make up approximately
$180,000 of Fairfield County's budget. There are counties in which the
County Commissioners job is not even a paid position. I just have a
couple of questions. How can three people run a county of this size
into the ground this deep? If the
economy is so and was so bad, the last avenue taken to bring in more
revenue for the county would be real estate. The tax payers in this
county are obviously a lot smarter than the commissioners think. The
commissioners have definitely under estimated the intelligence of this
county. This county is too smart and they saw right through the so
called "Safety Levy." This levy was not a true safety levy. The people
spoke loudly. Not against the "Safety
Levy," but against the commissioners. The taxpayers were not going to
save the commissioners from having to admit that they misspent money
and poorly invested money. The taxpayers were not going to allow the
commissioners to lie to the county. The commissioners built a Juvenile
Facility but are now unable to fund it any longer. They never thought
that they would have to
keep paying the people to work there I guess. That is pretty
intelligent? And let's discuss prisoner housing. The commissioners know
that we need a new jail. Not to make the prisoners more comfortable or
so the prisoners can be housed in the luxurious lifestyle. We need a
new jail simply for the fact that we are working in outdated jail
facilities that are safety issues for us. We as deputies are put at
risk due to the antiquated facilities. We are
outnumbered in the jail by our low staffing and the Wheeling Street
jail has black mold growing all over it. The Main Street Jail, I only
have two words for you, asbestos and lead. We do not want the prisoners
to have the good life, but we need to work in a safe area and our jails
are not safe for us to work in. The commissioners know this. Instead of
setting money aside to build us a new jail, the commissioners just keep
telling us to send the prisoners elsewhere. The money the commissioners
spend a year to house our prisoners elsewhere would be more than enough
to build the biggest and best jail probably in the United States, a
brand new 911 Center, and staff enough people to work these facilities
and fully staff our Patrol division to better keep you safe. This is
the type of misspending of your money that the
commissioners are guilty of. Even if the levy passed, the Sheriff's
Office was still going to have to lay off Deputies, and this was a
"Safety Levy?" We need a true Safety Levy. A levy dedicated to the
Safety of this county. A Levy that goes straight to the Sheriff's
Office. To pay to have Deputies on the streets and in your
neighborhoods. Deputies that can take the call when someone is breaking
into your house. Deputies that can take the call when your safety is
being threatened. Deputies that can unlock your car when you lock your
keys in your car, pull you and your children's vehicle out of ditch
when the roads are too icy. A safety levy that can keep dispatchers in
the radio room with equipment to take these calls and send the deputies
to you in your time of need. This is the type of Safety Levy we need.
Not a
"Safety Levy" that gives more money to the Jon, Judy, and Mike to
misspend. This county is too smart to give you any more money
Commissioners. How about a Safety Levy that is solely dedicated to
safety services so we can be self funded and not have to rely on these
so called commissioners.
